If you have been wondering whether Autism may help explain the way you think, feel, and move through the world, but aren’t sure if a full assessment is the right fit for you, an initial exploratory consultation can be a helpful place to begin. This is a one-hour appointment with a highly experienced Clinical Psychologist, offering space to reflect on your experiences in a supportive, respectful, and thoughtful way. Together, you can begin to consider whether autism may be a meaningful framework for understanding your experience. Guidance can be provided to help you decide whether or not you may wish to proceed with a comprehensive autism assessment.

Our assessment process includes at least three in-depth conversations that explore a client’s personal history and lived experiences and how these may relate to Autism. These sessions may also explore areas of general mental health and wellbeing. Most clients complete the assessment process in three sessions. Some clients may need more time or slower pacing during exploratory sessions and may benefit from a fourth session in this regard.
In some instances, someone who knew you during childhood may be invited to take part in your assessment process, if this is your preference. At the end of the assessment process, you will have a clear idea of whether your lived experience is best explained by Autism or whether other factors may better explain your experiences.
-
Face-to-face communication may be challenging for some individuals. Our practice aims to work flexibly around any accommodation you might need to make the online assessment process as comfortable as possible for you (including turning off your screen when needed, taking regular breaks, communicating via written text, or making other adjustments where helpful).
-
Following a comprehensive exploration of your personal experiences, you will receive collaborative feedback on the outcome of your assessment. You will also be provided with helpful resources, recommendations, and supports to assist you in making any required next steps.
-
You will receive an assessment summary outlining whether and how your experiences align with Autism. Where appropriate, additional documentation can be provided to support reasonable accommodations in work, education, or healthcare settings. Requirements can vary between organisations, and documentation can be tailored to the stated purpose where clinically appropriate.

Why people come to see us
‘I’ve wondered for years if I might be Autistic.’
You may have recognised yourself through reading, social media, podcasts, other Autistic people’s stories, or your own child’s assessment process. As research, knowledge, and education about autism has increased in recent years, many individuals arrive at a point of self-identification during adulthood because they now have a name that fits their lifelong experience. Our assessment process can take you from wondering to finally having the confirmation you may be seeking.
‘I don’t fit “stereotypes” of Autism, so I’m not sure if an assessment is even appropriate.’
Many Autistic adults are missed earlier in life and for some, few differences (if any) may have been observable during early development. This is especially common for people who mask, women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those whose difficulties were primarily explained by other mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and trauma. Over time, many Autistic adults experience that these prior diagnoses and treatments have not fully encapsulated their lived experiences or provided the type of help that was required at the time. Importantly, no “cookie-cutter” experience of Autism exists. Autistic experiences can be unique and individual. At The Neurodiversity Practice, we offer an assessment process that takes your own unique experience and context into account during your identification journey.
‘I need something I can actually use afterwards.’
For many people, the assessment is not just about an answer. It is about language, self-understanding, validation, and practical next steps. Our assessments meet professional standards and are widely accepted by the HSE and other relevant stakeholders. We consider a careful developmental and psychosocial history, structured clinical interviewing, formulation, and best-practice guidelines on Autistic identification. As part of your assessment feedback, you will receive documentation that is tailored to your specific needs.
‘I want clarity, but I’m worried about being misunderstood.’
We understand that seeking an assessment can feel vulnerable and exposing. Our role is not to judge you against stereotypes. It is to understand your lived experience carefully and respectfully and to empower you to explore your identity through a new, affirmative and validating lens. We understand that Autism is not a deficit or a disorder, but a natural variation in how a person’s brain processes the world. Decades of contending with environments that are suited to neurotypical needs can often leave Autistic individuals feeling burnt out. The majority of clients that undergo an assessment process at our practice report feeling understood, validated, and relieved post-assessment process.
