Adult Autism Assessment FAQs

Answers to common questions about online adult Autism assessments at The Neurodiversity Practice, a clinical psychologist-led service based in Dublin and available across Ireland.

  • This service is for adults aged 18 and over who are seeking a thoughtful, neuroaffirmative Autism assessment. Many people come to us because they are wondering whether Autism may help explain aspects of their lifelong experience, including masking, burnout, sensory sensitivities, overwhelm, social communication differences, or feeling “different.”

  • Yes. The Neurodiversity Practice is based in Dublin and offers online adult Autism assessments for clients across Ireland.

  • All appointments are currently delivered online, which means you can attend from a familiar and comfortable space while still receiving a structured, clinical psychologist-led assessment process.

  • Yes. We understand that video calls can be demanding and uncomfortable for some people.

We can discuss your communication preferences before and during the appointment. This may include turning your camera off, taking breaks, using written communication, slowing the pace of the session, or making other adjustments where helpful.

  • No, you do not need a GP referral to access an adult Autism assessment at The Neurodiversity Practice.

You can self-refer by completing the contact or booking form. If you are currently working with a GP, psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, or other healthcare professional, you are welcome to let us know, but this is not required to begin the process.

  • The Neurodiversity Practice offers a clinical psychologist-led, neuroaffirmative approach to adult Autism assessment.

This means we aim to understand your experiences in context, rather than viewing difference only through a deficit-based lens. The process is collaborative, respectful, and evidence-informed, with careful attention to your lived experience, identity, strengths, challenges, and support needs.

Our aim is not only to answer the question of whether Autism fits your experience, but to help you leave with a clearer and more compassionate understanding of yourself. Clients often tell us that our assessment process helps them feel understood, validated, and clearer about their experiences.

  • This is common for many adults and it does not mean you cannot attend an assessment. We will explore what you do remember, alongside your current experiences, developmental history, school reports if available, family stories, and patterns that have been present across your life.

  • No, not always. It can sometimes be helpful to include someone who knew you during childhood, such as a parent, sibling, caregiver, or long-standing family friend. However, we understand that this is not possible or appropriate for everyone.

  • First, complete our online consent form.

We will then get in touch with you to book your appointment. We will offer you an appointment at our earliest possible availability.

Before the appointment, we will ask you to complete some background information and will send you payment details. Once you have paid, the appointment can proceed.

The adult Autism assessment process usually involves a combination of questionnaires, clinical interview, developmental history, and discussion of your lived experience.

We explore areas such as communication, relationships, sensory processing, routines, interests, masking, burnout, daily functioning, mental health, and how you have experienced different environments across your life.

The process is collaborative and paced with your needs in mind. You will have space to ask questions, share examples, and reflect on what feels relevant to your story.

  • The full assessment process usually takes place over several online appointments.

Most clients complete the process over three sessions, although some people may benefit from a fourth session if more time, reflection, or slower pacing is needed. Sessions are typically booked a few days apart.

  • Yes. Following the assessment and feedback process, you will receive written documentation outlining the outcome of the assessment.

This will include whether your experiences are consistent with Autism, along with a clear summary of the clinical reasoning and relevant support considerations.

  • Written documentation usually includes a summary of the assessment process, relevant background information, key clinical findings, assessment outcome where applicable, and recommendations.

Where appropriate, it may include information about reasonable accommodations or support needs in areas such as work, education, healthcare, or daily life.

The exact format may depend on the purpose of the documentation and what is clinically appropriate.

  • Yes, where appropriate, documentation can be used to support requests for reasonable accommodations or additional supports.

This may include workplace accommodations, education-related supports, or healthcare adjustments. Requirements can vary between organisations, so we cannot guarantee how every external body will respond to documentation.

Where possible, we aim to make recommendations clear, practical, and relevant to your needs.

  • If the assessment suggests that Autism is not the best explanation for your experiences, this will be discussed with you clearly and respectfully. A good assessment should help clarify your self-understanding, regardless of the outcome.

The adult Autism assessment process will explore which aspects of Autism do and do not fit your experiences, as well as identify what parts of your experience may be better explained by other factors.

  • Our current fees are listed on the Services page.

The Neurodiversity Practice offers an initial Autism Consultation and a Comprehensive Adult Autism Assessment. The consultation may be helpful if you are unsure whether to proceed with a full assessment, while the comprehensive assessment is designed for adults seeking a full diagnostic process and written documentation.

  • Many adults feel uncertain before beginning an Autism assessment. You may be wondering whether your experiences “count” or whether assessment would be useful at this stage of life.

If you are unsure, you can begin with an Autism Consultation. This gives you space to discuss your questions, explore whether assessment may be appropriate, and decide on the next step without committing to the full process straight away.
